Overview 2015

In 2015, Bettercoal took a holistic view of its program to ensure there is value for supplier companies to engage in the assessment program and that member companies are implementing Bettercoal in line with their commitments. At the same time we continued to drive forward the Assessment Program and begin strengthening the assurance framework.

Highlights include:

1. 20 mines involved in the Assessment Programme are at different stages, from Self-Assessment Questionnaires to on-site independent assessments
2. Further first time site-assessments:
   a. KRU (Russia), assessment by Wardell Armstrong International
   b. Canyon Coal (South Africa), assessment by Synergy Global Consulting Ltd.
   c. PT Adaro (Indonesia), assessment by ERM-CVS (started in 2015, with site-assessment in Jan 2016)
3. 1 re-assessment taken place (Drummond, Colombia), assessment by ERM-CVS
4. Expanded membership by 2 new members and 2 new Associate members, to a total of 17 regular and associate members
5. Created the Technical & Advisory Committee, ensuring multi-stakeholder representation
6. Updated our on-line reporting to include a summary of members’ obligations, participating suppliers and published our first Progress Report
7. Reached out to the financial community to understand how Bettercoal can complement their risk analysis

Bettercoal 4Q Events

1. 3-4 September: Coaltrans Japan – Martin Christie met with representatives of Asian utilities and steel companies to explore relevance of Bettercoal in Asia
2. 21-22 October: International Forum on Sustainable Value Chains (ISVC) Annual meeting; Managing Sustainability Challenges in Multinational Value Chains. Martin Christie participated in a panel with representatives of other supply chain initiatives and a representative from the EU Commission.
3. 11 November: UNESA Conference[4] in Madrid, Spain. Marieke van der Mijn, Bettercoal’s Assessment Manager took part in the panel discussion on the role of Bettercoal in supply chain due diligence.
4. 18-19 November: IndustriAll Coal conference. Martin Christie part of panel discussion on Organisational Health and Safety and working conditions
