Bettercoal launches Country Working Groups
Published on December 11, 2018
Bettercoal has launched two Country Working Groups to help drive the initiative’s Country Prioritisation Strategy in Colombia and Russia. These will serve as a platform for dialogue between Bettercoal Members and the coal mining companies to develop a coordinated approach to the monitoring of the Continuous Improvement Plans (CIPs), address the risks relevant to each country, grow Supplier participation and improve communications with key stakeholders.
Participation is open to all Bettercoal Members and experts and other participants will be invited to contribute. The Member companies that form the Colombia Working Group are Drax, ENGIE, ESB, RWE, Uniper and Vattenfall, while the Russia Working Group includes Drax, ENGIE, ESB, Fortum, RWE, Uniper and Vattenfall.
The following priorities were outlined during the kick-off meetings of the Country Working Groups:
To engage with Suppliers in Colombia and Russia on their CIPs;
To better understand the context in which Suppliers in both countries operate, by mapping the key stakeholders and developing engagement strategies;
To provide a forum for sharing information on best practice, common issues and cumulative impact.
Bettercoal Executive Director Anne-Claire Howard said:
“We are very happy to launch the Colombia and Russia working groups as these will allow Bettercoal to engage with mining companies, civil society organisations, governments, academia and other relevant stakeholders in a more coordinated manner. It will also allow us to develop sound impact measurement tools to assess the progress made by Bettercoal on the ground.”
The Terms of Reference for both working groups are available on the Bettercoal website.
Bettercoal is a global standards initiative established in 2012 by major coal buyers striving to promote continuous improvement of sustainability performance in their coal supply chain.
